Summary
of |
A
Mechanical Engineer with broad-base experience in analyzing diverse systems
and developing state-of-the art computer models of those systems. He
began working in the power industry in 1980 at the TVA Engineering
Laboratory. Since that time he has successfully completed projects for
many power-producing utilities in North America and around the World, working
with coal, oil, and gas fired conventional plants, combined cycle plants,
nuclear plants, and alternative fuel plants, as well as in such process industries
as paper mills and air separation plants. He has also completed many
projects in the associated environmental areas, including thermal and
hazardous materials transport, for the Department of Energy, the Department
of Defense, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Army Corps of
Engineers. Throughout this time he has developed numerous computer
models of complex systems. These models have been based on and
validated with measured data, and not simply academic exercises. As a
part of this development, he has been involved in the data acquisition
process and the associated instrumentation needed to acquire such data. |

His
Technical Expertise includes the following core competencies:
|
|||||||||||||||
Professional |
Principal Performance Engineer McHale
& Associates, Inc. (dba McHale Performance) 2007—present While at McHale
Performance he has developed dozens of detailed computer models for coal, gas,
and oil fired conventional, combined cycle, and alternate fuel power plants,
as well as process industries, including paper mills, and has utilized these
models to predict the performance of these systems under operating conditions
and to correct as-tested performance back to design or contract
performance. He has also utilized these plant models to perform
long-term historical simulations in order to quantify the performance of
plants over their expected life cycle and to quantify the impact of different
replacement or upgrade equipment options and proposed environmental
regulations as well as power purchase agreements. He has also performed
extensive analyses of power plant operational data, identifying periods of
base load, operational anomalies, and the prediction of equipment failure. |

Professional |
Engineer
& Computer Model Developer P-Squared
Technologies & Dynamic Solutions 1993—2007
While at Dynamic Solutions he developed an interactive three-dimensional
model of DOE's Molten Salt Reactor, which was used to train operators.
He also developed an interactive three-dimensional model of the original
Manhattan Project nuclear fuel enrichment facility, which was being
demolished. This interactive model was not only used for demolition
training, but also to track the status and location of the almost 20,000
individual components, each having differing levels of radioactivity.
He also developed an interactive three-dimensional model of the nearby DOE
nuclear waste burial site, which was used to track the status and location of
the diverse inventory, including where and how each item could be moved based
on its level of radioactivity. He also developed an interactive
three-dimensional model of the future DOE museum, including walk-through
capability and transparent display cases containing specific historical
artifacts from the Manhattan He also developed a technically correct
three-dimensional animated model of the flooding of downtown Philadelphia in
June of 2001, which spawned numerous litigations. This model was based
on measured flood stages, aerial photographs, and doppler radar throughout
the storm and included detailed topography, buildings, roads, railways,
overpasses and culverts.
While at P-Squared Technologies he developed a computer program to create
three-dimensional grids for solving groundwater flow in complex geological
structures with random fractures in order to simulate karst formations.
To accompany these simulations, he also developed a computer program to track
particles through any three-dimensional media in the presence of complex flow
fields with specific application to contaminant transport in
groundwater. This particle tracker also creates technically correct
animations of the contaminant migration. These two models are still
used on the largest remediation project ever undertaken by the Department of
Defense and have been repeatedly verified in their accuracy by field data. |

Professional |
Engineer &
Computer Model Developer Tennessee Valley
Authority, Engineering Laboratory 1980—1993 While at the Tennessee
Valley Authority's Engineering Laboratory he developed a computer program to
analyze the heat and mass transfer and air flow in mechanical and natural
draft, crossflow and counterflow cooling towers, which is still used today by
utilities and manufacturers. He also developed the first computer
program which would run on a mini-computer to analyze thermodynamic cycles,
including, but not limited to, coal-fired and nuclear power plants. He
also developed one or more computer models with differing levels of
complexity for every one of TVA's then thirty-nine generating
facilities. He also developed models to perform long-term historical
simulations for two coal-fired and six nuclear plants plus a simplified
long-term simulation for the entire TVA power system. These models were
the basis for every NPDES 316(a) variance obtained by TVA at its nuclear
plants. He also collected extensive field data and then developed a numerical
model of the discharge of a thermal plume through a submerged multi-port
diffuser into a thermally stratified, flowing environment which was so
successful at predicting the downstream river temperature that the EPA has
accepted this calculation in lieu of maintaining monitoring stations in the
navigation channel. He was also part of the team, which developed the
first computer program to solve complex branched pipe network flow ever to be
approved by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for use on safety-related
systems. |
